Learn to Crochet

Would you like to be handy with a hook?
Crochet is experiencing a huge revival at the moment and the patterns and yarns available are fresh and exciting and with just a few basic stitches you can create wonderful embellishments or add interesting edges and borders to knitted or felted projects.
During the day you will learn the basic stitches and how to work in a straight piece. we will then look at simple shaping, and take time to explore working in the round.
So why not join us and learn this fabulous craft that's quick, easy and hugely addictive!

Introduction to Machine Sewing
Saturday 11th May 10:30 - 4:30pm 2013
Do you have a sewing machine?......would you like to get it out of the box? :-)
If you would like some help in exploring your machine and mastering some of the basics of machine sewing then why not come along and join us for a day of fun and creativity!
We will learn the basics of how to thread the machine, wind bobbins, use all the dials and stitches and alter tension and stitch length. We will then look at simple seams, gathers and pleats and also introduce you to zips and buttonholes!
During the course of the day you will practise all your techniques by making a simple cushion cover with a zip or button fastening.
So why not treat yourself to half a metre of fabulous fabric a zip or 2 buttons to match and come along to get to grips with your machine!......what will you make next??
Cost £50.00 (includes all materials for practise, but not for the cushion cover, a light lunch and refreshments)

Learn to Knit
Saturday May 18th 10:30 - 4:30pm 2013
Knitting hasn't been so popular since the 1940's so come along and learn this fabulous craft. The patterns and yarns available now are wonderfully modern and beautiful, a far cry from the itchy wool of school jumpers!
We will cover all the basics, Cast On, Knit, Purl, Cast off, some simple increases and decreases and how to catch a dropped stitch!! We'll also look at simple pattern reading and help you understand all those mysterious abbreviations!
Maybe you were taught to knit when you were a child and would like to re-learn or you feel pretty rusty with the needles after a long absence....or maybe it's something you've always wanted to do....whatever the reason come along and we will work to your pace and get you knitting like a Nana in no time!
Cost - £48 (includes a set of 4mm bamboo needles, yarn and a light lunch)
Introduction to Machine Patchwork and Quilting
Saturday June 8th 10:30 - 4:30pm
If you love fabrics and want to explore this ever popular craft, then this workshop is perfect for you!
The day will unlock all the mysteries of fat quarters, rotary cutters and much, much more! You will learn how to cut and piece your patchwork together, how to make the most out of your chosen fabrics and colour pallette, how to effectively machine sew them together and how to add your wadding and backing fabric to create a beautiful lap or cot quilt.
With some simple hints and tips, you will soon be scouring the fabric shops for inspiration for your next quilted project!Come and join us for a fabulous fabric day!
Cost £50 (Includes a light lunch and refreshments.)
You can either bring along your own fabric or buy a Fabric Bundle for a small cost from the tutor. We recommend that you bring your own machine, but do have machines here if you would prefer.
Alteration Station!
Saturday 15th June 2013 10:30 - 4:30pm 
Would you like to be able to do some simple alterations such as changing a zip, taking in a waistband, altering the length of a skirt or trousers? Maybe you are tired of 'wonder webbing' everything together? Or maybe you'd like to get involved in the 'make-do-and-mend' trend that is all around us!
Stop throwing away clothes because they need a little mending, learn to make simple repairs and alterations and you'll save yourself a fortune! You'll also be able to buy in vintage shops knowing that you can alter clothes slightly for a perfect fit!
Come and join us .....you know it makes sense....
Cost £48 (includes lunch and refreshments and basic materials. You are encouraged to bring along an item of clothing that needs mending/altering so that you can put your new skills into practise straight away!)
Charity Knitting Surgery!
Saturday 15th June, open from 10:30 - 4:00pm, pop in with your problem....
We all have problems with our knitting projects and very often if we don't know how to fix them, they just stay in the knitting bag gathering dust!
Why not come along to our 'Knitting Surgery' and get some help to get you back on track and also help our chosen charity Mother's of Africa at the same time!
Whether it's dropped stitches that have stopped you in your tracks or a pattern that's more complicated than the Da Vinci code!....our gang of knitters will be able to help, all we ask is that you donate a minimum of £5 to the charity fund more details of which can be found on our News page.
So please come along and help a worthy cause as well as having a cuppa and untangling your project problems!
You can either book an appointment if you are pushed for time or just pop in and see us. We will obviously try and help with any problems, but we are aiming to keep each 'appointment' to no more than 30 - 45mins to try and see as many people as possible.

This workshop is perfect for beginners wanting to get to grips with their machine AND make something beautiful while you're at it!
Summer is on the way.......we can all dream!....and what better way to celebrate than with some pretty bunting.
You will not only learn your simple seams and sewing techniques, but you'll be making a beautiful strip of eight flag bunting and a wonderful 'bunting' inspired cushion cover!
.....be warned though...sewing is hugely addictive and you'll be making these sets as gifts for all your friends and family!

Finishing Techniques for Knitters
Saturday 29th June 2013 10:30 - 4:30pm
Are you one of those knitters that dreads the 'sewing up'? Do you hand your knitted projects over to Mum to sew up for you?
Why not join us for some sound seam advice and get inspired to finish off those projects that are just sitting in your knitting basket waiting for the 'sewing up elves' to complete for you....
We'll take a look at blocking, try out a few seam options for different projects, try and find the joy in 'sewing in ends', conquer the fear of pick-up-and-knit and discover a few more tips and techniques along the way. So if you would like to take control of your unfinished projects then this is the workshop for you!
There is a little pre-workshop project to start before you attend so please book in plenty of time.

Exploring Feltmaking
Saturday 20th July 2013, 10:30 - 4:30pm
A fun and exciting workshop exploring the possibilities of feltmaking.
Working with a range of coloured Merino fibres, you'll learn how, with a bit of warm water, soap and elbow grease, you can turn them into handmade felt which will then be used to make an accessory such as a bag, purse, 3D structure, i-pod/phone cover or a piece of jewellery....the possibilites are endless! By learning a few basic 'rules' and techniques you will be able to add originality and creativity to your work and this workshop will inspire you to use felt in many different ways!
Cost - £55 (includes all materials, lunch and refreshments)

How to Book
If you would like to book a place on one of our wonderful workshops or classes then please give us a ring on 02920 211508 or send us an email at info@calonyarns.co.uk telling us which date you would like and give us your full name , address and contact number.
We will then ask for a deposit of around 40% of the total fee to secure your place, you can either pop in to pay or pay by card over the phone. This deposit is non-refundable. You would then need to pay the balance of your workshop/course fee two weeks before the start date. We are unable to offer a refund for any workshops or courses that are unattended, but you are more than welcome to send someone else in your place! We will always try to be accommodating, so if you have any problems with booking or have to cancel then let us know with as much notice as possible and we will try to help.
